Core Stability

The 'core' is a term given to a group of muscles running along the length of the torso which are essential for moving the body and standing up straight. Good core stability increases the power sent to the arms and lengths.

Core stability training is vital for athletes involved in any sport and plays an important role in avoiding back injuries as well as correcting flawed running techniques which can contribute to injuries like Achilles tendinitis and shin splints.

As well as the abdominal muscles, key muscles to maintain for good core stability are the Gluteus medius and minimus, the multifidus and hip flexors. All of these areas require strengthening to improve overall core stability.

Sports Injury Bulletin has a wealth of information on core stability and how it helps prevent injury as well as the most up-to-date core stability training routines to help you improve core strength. Download our Free Core Stability Report here.

Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis is a common sports injury, often caused by overuse and overtraining.

The Achilles tendon connects the tip of the heel to the calf and works hardest when the ankle is flexed downwards. The tendon is prone to injury when there is excessive movement or overload. Achilles tendinitis manifests itself in inflammation of the tendon and there is often visible swelling.

In the worst case scenario, a rupture of the Achilles tendon is present, in which case a long period of recovery is necessary, as well as surgery in some instances. Symptoms include sharp, excruciating pain and a ‘snapping’ sensation.

Careful choice of footwear is paramount when it comes to preventing Achilles tendinitis – comfort and support are the priorities.

Knee Injuries

Knee injuries are notorious for disrupting and even ending an athlete’s career, so it’s important that sportsmen and sportswomen learn everything they can about them.

A knee injury is not only a great source of pain but can put an athlete out of action for a long period of time and requires a careful course of rehabilitation.

Injuries to the medial ligament and cruciate ligament are among the most common sources of knee trouble, especially in sports like soccer, and occur as a result of a sudden impact or hyper-extending the ligament.

Surgery is frequently used to repair knee ligament damage, especially where professional athletes are concerned. However, amateur sports enthusiasts often have to rely on a less expensive programme of rest and recuperation to allow them to return to action.

In heavy contact sports, knee injuries can be difficult to avoid. However, increasing strength and flexibility in the joint is one of the keys to preventing knee injuries.

Sports Injury Bulletin has comprehensive advice on knee injuries, with case studies from specific sports. Download our Free Knee Pain Report here.

Shoulder Injuries

Anyone who pitches in baseball or plays quarterback for their football team knows how painful a shoulder injury can be.

Of course, shoulder injuries occur in many other sports too. Damage to the shoulder can range from tendonitis of the rotator cuff to disclocation and fractures of the collarbone.

Shoulder injuries occur frequently in sports where athletes are required to pivot aggressively, such as tennis, cricket and baseball. They are also prevalent in load-bearing disciplines like weightlifting where muscles and joints are put under heavy pressure, or contact sports such football where collisions or falls can result in strains, dislocation or breaks.

It is essential to strengthen the muscles in the shoulder in order to lower the risk of injury and improve flexibility.

Sports Injury Bulletin has plenty of tips and advice to help athletes avoid and recover from shoulder injuries. Download our Free Shoulder Injuries Report here.
