Martial arts sounds like a particularly dangerous sport to take up but martial arts injuries are really no more common than in sports like soccer or basketball.

Most martial arts injuries are perhaps unsurprisingly a result of impact injuries so there are often cuts and bruises as well as ankle and wrist sprains.

More serious martial arts injuries that can be quite common are concussions. Head injuries are serious in any sport and martial arts are no different. A competitor should immediately stop training if they experience a blow to the head.

In order to prevent martial arts injuries, athletes should ensure they have the right safety equipment in the form of head gear and other padding. Some athletes might not like how it looks or feels but it can prevent many of the injuries associated with martial arts.

A long warm up will ensure no muscle pulls and tears occur and this will also improve an athlete’s flexibility, which is important for any martial arts.
